Correspondence Course In Revenue Management
Dear Sir,
I have completed my graduation ie degree
in hotel management and catering technology in the year 1995 and
started working for Sheraton in Dubai. Presently I am working for
a five-star deluxe hotel belonging to the Rosewood Hotels &
Resorts in Saudia.
I have been wanting to upgrade my qualification,
but owing to some or other reasons could not do it. Finally, I have
decided to take up a correspondence course in revenue management
or rooms divisions with a specialisation in revenue.
Would you also be able to help me with
the names and addresses of institutions and organisations which
can offer me any financial support to take up the course. It would
be great help if you could provide the requested information.
With best regards,
Tareq Saleem

Dear Tareq,
Good to see that people outside India are
referring the Express Hotelier & Caterer for an update on the
latest in the hospitality industry, besides looking out for guidance
and other information.
From the information you have provided
about yourself, it seems that you have a great deal of work experience
in the hotel industry. It indicates that you are quite keen on getting
further qualification and upgrading your knowledge in a specific
area of hotel operation. That is really smart thinking on your part.
Regarding your query about a correspondence
course in revenue management or rooms divisions specialisation in
revenue, we suggest you to check out the course being offered by
the Educational Institute of American Hotel & Lodging Association
(EI-AH&LA), USA. The institute offers a range of skills upgradation
programmes in various areas of hotel operations and management.
Courses from this institute, besides being very much in tune with
the present practices in the global hospitality industry, are also
very futuristic in nature.
Thus, taking up your choice of programme
from EI-AH&LA would not only upgrade your educational qualification
but also enhance the possibility of being getting recognised in
the hospitality industry across the globe and impress your future
employers too.
For details on the various programmes being
offered by EI-AH&LA, you could visit their website which is
www.ei-ahla.org. You could also get in touch with K V Simon, regional
vice-president, EI-AH&LA, who is based in Mumbai at eiahma@vsnl.com.
As far as your second query is concerned,
it is very difficult to provide you with information on institutions
and organisations that would be able to help you financially in
taking up the course. There are not many organisations, which assist
hospitality aspirants and professionals by way of sponsorships or
scholarships.
An option you could look at is a study
loan from any of the banks (most of the banks in India offer study
loans. There would be banks in Dubai/ Saudia as well offering this
facility to students or people interested in taking up a skills
upgradation programme).
Hope this of help to you. Do let us know
your opinion on the same. It would be great if you could also keep
us posted on the developments taking place in the hospitality industry
in Dubai and Saudia.
Keep in touch and do update us from time
to time on your professional career.
Career In Cruiseliners
Respected Sir,
Born in Tamil Nadu and brought up in Pondicherry,
I finished my higher secondary education (HSC) there and took up
a certificate course in food and beverage service in 1999-2000 from
the Pondicherry Institute of Hospitality Crafts (now Pondicherry
Institute of Hospitality Management and Catering Technology).
I have done my industrial training at a
leading property in Jodhpur, Rajasthan for 45 days from December
99 - January 2000. After my course, I also did a six-months
training at another five-star deluxe hotel in Vizag, Andhra Pradesh,
belonging to the same group.
Thereafter, I was given a job on a contractual
basis for a year from January 1 2001 to December 31 2001 which was
renewed again the following year. I got a confirmation from them
and am presently working in the same property as assistant steward.
I am fluent in English, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil.
I would like to pursue a career in cruise
liners. I would be grateful if you could please guide me whether
my qualification and work experience is good enough for a job according
to cruise standards and whether I have a chance of getting a job
in cruise ships.
Thanking you,
VSK Balaji

Dear Balaji,
From the brief information you have given
about yourself, there is no doubt you have really worked hard to
make the best use of your qualification in making a career in the
hotel industry. You also have good amount of work experience in
five-star hotels and the best part of it is that you have a great
hospitality brand name on your CV, which also indicates to the fact
that you must possess exceptional qualities and capabilities, else
you would not have landed up a job with that group.
Your fascination to work in the cruise
industry is but obvious because that is the most exciting place
every hospitality aspirant wants to be in. Besides, you seem to
comply with most of the work experience related requirements. The
only problematic area seems to be your educational qualification
which is (HSC/12th standard) and a certificate course in food and
beverage service. This is because most of the cruise liners prefer
to hire a degree or diploma holder in hotel management and catering
technology. Having said that, we must also say that miracles do
happen in life and you may just get lucky (you may be able to convince
the cruise recruiters in the same manner that you have convinced
your present employers of your qualities and capabilities).
We suggest you to get in touch with Aspi
D Nallaseth, vice-president, Purple Patch Hotel Solutions at purplepatch@vsnl.net.
This organisation is an executive search firm for the hospitality
industry in general and also does recruitment for most of the leading
cruise liners across the globe.
Wishing you all the best for your future.
