Nurturing intellect

SRM Institute of Hotel Management is consistently helping students to widen their intellectual horizon

SRM Institute of Hotel Management was established in 1993 with an aim to produce the best hospitality professionals in the country. The hospitality institute offers valuable practical experience to the students while they are pursuing the course. "We have a four-star hotel where students spend ample time in getting the practical experience. It gives a unique advantage to our students as they are exposed to hands on experience while studying in the college," says Antony Ashok Kumar, principal, SRM Institute of Hotel Management.

The curriculum is based on the American system. The T-GROUP Therapy concept has been adopted by SRM Institute of Hotel Managament. It offers a three-year degree in B.Sc., a three-year diploma in Hotel Management and Catering Technology (approved by the All India Council for Technical Education, AICTE), a 10-month international post-graduation diploma in facility management (from Rijkshoge School Ijselland, Deventer, The Netherlands) and craft/certificate courses in food production, bakery and confectionery, F&B service, front office, housekeeping etc.

"We create an environment where students participate and interact with the faculty for complete comprehension and understanding of the subjects. We encourage students to go beyond the purview of the syllabus and lay emphasis on hands on training in various departments. This modern infrastructure helps the students to widen their intellectual horizon," mentions Kumar. The insitute also has foreign tie-ups. It has signed MoUs with reputed international universities including Cambraian College and Algoma University, Canada, Youngsan University, Korea, University of Wisconsin and Bryant University, U.S.A. and Taylors College University, Malaysia. Every successful student is absorbed by the hotel chain owned by SRM Group or placed in other hotel chains, fast food chains, BPOs, tourism sector, aviation sector etc.

‘Our objective is to help each student in getting his or her dream job’

Antony Ashok Kumar, principal, SRM Institute of Hotel Management, speaks to Dinkar Farwaha

What is the USP of SRM Institute of Hotel Management?

Our hotel is one of our strongest USPs. The practical knowledge offered to the students in the hotel while they are studying is unmatched. We have a highly knowledgeable and well qualified faculty which grooms the students and helps in making them strong hospitality professionals. Apart from the regular academic activities, we invite experts from the industry to give guest lectures to the students which helps in updating them about the current trends in the hospitality industry. Moreover, we also send students for industrial training for a period of 16 weeks, which is mandatory through which they are able to get hands-on experience in all major departments. Furthermore, teachers undertake a 'train the trainer' programme every year which helps them in evaluating and upgrading their knowledge. We have won various awards and accolades which is a testimonial of our hardwork and perseverance.

How do you guide your students in their careers?

Our objective is to help each student in getting his or her dream job. We help each and every student in not only attaining the right knowledge but also developing his or her personality, grooming man-management skills, building confidence etc. We invite the HR of top hotels to our college so that they can interact with our students, guide them about the opportunities available in their respective organisations and accordingly prepare them.

What does the future hold for hospitality education in India?

Hospitality education in our country is at par with any country in the world. The future is very bright. The quality of education would continue to improve and the best colleges in the country would set a benchmark in the hospitality education.

What is your message to aspiring students who wish to make a career in the hospitality sector?

Hospitality is one of the fastest growing industries globally. Sky is the limit for hospitality students. My message to aspiring students is that if you have the right attitude and are passionate about the hospitality industry, then this is the career for you.
