Education in leisure

Nestled in India's leading tourist destination, IHM Goa is the perfect platform for students who want to understand in-depth the business of leisure

The Institute of Hotel Management Goa has been established under the National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. Located in Goa, it provides the right setting for the serious hospitality student to experience tourism activities first hand.

IHM Goa understands that learning requires stimulation of interest in new concepts while challenging the old, an exchange of ideas, and a tweaking of attitudes - all of which makes managers out of students. In today's world, learning is possible via various avenues - the internet, television, print - and the world is literally at the students' doorstep. Yet, many a bright spark is extinguished because of a wrong choice of institute or a career that is already saturated or rife with cut-throat competition.

The hospitality industry offers an opportunity to think out-of-the-box, being creative and reaping the benefits of that unique talent. Students need the input of skills and knowledge at a right level that does not restrain and constrict the inherent creativity of their youth. The energy and experience of the institute's faculty members enables them to feel the pulse of the students and synchronise this with the industry and its demands.

As part of the three-year training on campus, students take on supervisory roles in well-designed facilities like the training kitchens and bakery/confectionery that are modern and hygienic. A well appointed library with internet access brings them up to speed with the latest trends in the industry. A training restaurant and bar is the venue for many a theme party organised and executed by the students themselves.

Courses currently offered at IHM Goa include the three-year BSc in H&HA degree, the craftsmanship courses in food production and patisserie and F&B service. Industry professionals and individuals are offered knowledge by way of certification through short term courses. Students are encouraged to participate and hone their talents - dancing, singing, drama and music all of which find a place in the extra-curricular activities at the institute, which offers students hostel facility inside the campus.

'The industry would do well in being more hospitable to its employees'

Roque D'cruz, principal of IHM Goa, speaks to Neeti Mehra of challenges and opportunities in the industry

Principal of IHM Goa

How is hospitality education adapting itself to produce global leaders?

The industry has evolved tremendously from being just a service industry. Also, the curricula today reflect the role of technology, latest techniques in management and customer relations among other subjects.

Are you tweaking education to cater to emerging segments such as no-frills hotels and QSRs?

The curriculum provides for adequate training in various aspects of the trade. For instance, students have to present research projects with the help of a guide on current and emerging trends. This assists in bridging the gap between students and professionals in the industry.

What should the industry do to stem the extremely high attrition rates?

This is a very challenging task. The industry needs to acknowledge that their employees are an asset and treat them accordingly. Providing regular training and growth opportunities to the employees along with commensurate pay packages, assuring reasonable working schedules to their staff would go a long way in reducing attrition rates. The hospitality industry would do well to be a bit more 'hospitable' towards its own employees!

How critical is continuing education to the executive level?

A professional needs to constantly seek avenues for self development. Maintaining a competitive edge is essential if one seeks to grow and contribute to the industry. One needs to constantly re-invent oneself in order to thrive in this industry.

What is your message to aspiring students?

The world is at your doorstep. Get the right attitude and passion, and take advantage of this industry to make an exciting and rewarding career for yourself. If you are innovative, love challenges and interaction with people - this is definitely the career for you.
