Imparting culinary skills
Kohinoor-IMI school of hospitality management has been developed
with a mission to provide the best culinary talent to the industry. By Dinkar
Farwaha
Kohinoor-IMI
school of hospitality management, situated in the Kohinoor global campus in
Khandala, was started in the year 2000 with an aim to develop globally-recognised
hospitality management practices among budding hospitality professionals.
Offering a BBA degree in hotel and tourism management, it is affiliated to the
Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU). The course curriculum
ranges from subjects like front office operations, housekeeping operations,
food production and food and beverage service to cruise line management, airline
management, event management, hospitality sales and marketing. To provide students
with an insight into the professional world, the institute offers a 22-week
training programme in hospitality units - both in India and abroad. Moreover,
the institute also provides students the option of pursuing a BA degree in International
Hotel & Tourism Management from the UK-affiliated Manchester Metropolitan
University in Switzerland.
To
ensure all-round development of the students, the institute also offers personality
development courses. Further, it offers two foreign language courses, namely
French and German to increase job opportunities for students in the market.
The institute also provides a platform for academicians, professionals, students
and entrepreneurs to discuss the various trends in the industry and also to
address the integral issues, at a national hospitality conference that it organises
every year.
The theme of the conference last year was 'Hospitality Industry in India-today
and beyond'. This year, the conference, scheduled to be held on October 25 and
26 will be based on the theme, 'Hospitality Industry - the crux of the service
industry'.

Jiten Acharya, Principal, Kohinoor-IMI,
School of Hospitality Management talks about the institute and education
today. By Dinkar Farwaha
How
comprehensive is hospitality education today with regard to the making
of an 'all-round manager'?
I think that the curriculum of a degree or diploma course
in hospitality education in India, can groom a serious student to become
an all-round entry level management candidate. The strength lies in three
aspects of the course content:
1) Operational skills are developed through various
core subjects with both theoretical and practical implications.
2) Business management and development skills are imparted through various
management courses.
3) Personal attitude development is ensured through various soft skills
training.
In short, a student is groomed as a business manager,
specialising in the hospitality industry.
What opportunities are available to hospitality
students today?
The hospitality industry is one of the most booming industries
today. I reckon that this industry will absorb maximum manpower in the
future and will also be the most glamorous and lucrative profession. Moreover,
job opportunities are not limited to hotels and resorts, but rather the
entire service sector; that is, aviation, retail, cruise lines, BPOs,
international banks and insurance companies, event management companies,
as well as other service organisations.
What does the future hold for hospitality education
in India, and what role do you expect your institute will play in bringing
about that change?
With rapid development of the industry, job opportunities
are sure to rise. And with more job opportunities, the need for quality
education will also increase. Therefore, the future is very bright for
the hospitality education. The need of the hour is to develop hospitality
management practices. Keeping that in mind, our institute is working hard
to cater to the future requirements of the industry, by constantly refreshing
our curriculum and developing new courses to match the latest trends in
the industry.
