Self-reliant
in accommodation
An unexpected side-effect of the arrival of India Inc on the
global platform is the scarcity of rooms, inexpensive or otherwise,
for business travellers. Trivial as it may sound, it is anything
but so, as companies look at creating their own accommodation
solutions. Sanjeev Bhar finds out its repercussions on the
hospitality trade
India
Outlook 2010
To make most of the current boom in the Indian hospitality,
investors and hoteliers enrolled themselves for the Hotel
Investment Conference - South Asia (HICSA) held on April 4
- 5, 2007. Manav Thadani, managing director of HVS Hospitality
Services, in his presentation 'India Outlook 2010' laid down
hard facts from the research conducted by HVS.
Incredible
India!
Giving a glimpse into the meteoric growth India has witnessed
over the past decade, Amitabh Kant points out that India is
the fastest growing tourist economy where tourism has grown
at a whopping 13 per cent per annum in the past four years.
SA
regional outlook
Citing the example of the India Incredible campaign, Dr Daniel
Thorniley commented that India was doing great in almost every
sector and countries all over the world need to take inspiration
from the country.
Global
CEO outlook
The topic was clear: how global CEOs visualise the changing
scenario and scope for developments in India. Peter Greenberg
moderating the event gave a perspective of his own urging
the panelists to individually talk about their role and how
they look at India as a growing destination.
The
fair game - Management contracts
Over the last decade and essentially of late, the Indian hotel
sector is increasingly witnessing indulgence in management
contracts.
Real
estate in India - Impact on hospitality
The real estate story in India is on the rise. While more
than 50 bigwig foreign funds have already checked in, the
first half of 2007 will see at least 25 more funds making
an Indian entry.
Private
equity- Hype or reality?
Along with foreign companies venturing into the Indian market,
Indian companies are too becoming more forceful globally and
extending their footprints outside the country.
Asian
hospitality on the rise
Highlighting the importance of investment on varied sectors
these days that directly attribute to the hospitality industry
around the world, Ho Kwon Ping, executive chairman of Banyan
Tree Holdings, spoke on the rise of India and China as nations
and the areas where they need to look at in order to grow.
Back-of-the-house
hospitality
With the theme to present expertise through outsourcing of
jobs, Amitabh Chaudhary - CEO, Infosys BPO made a presentation
of what his company is doing and how can a hospitality concern
outsource its different chores to get perfect work.
Scope
of limited service products in emerging markets
The emergence of hotels with limited service is an indicator
of the recent trend. Budget hotels work on the principle of
limited purchasing power, effective real estate use, efficient
use of employees, economies of scale and specialisation in
services. Moderator Nikhil Nath started the session by asking
his panelists about the future of limited service products
in the present hospitality scenario.
Learning
from our neighbours
With a population of over a billion people, India had just
4.5 million tourists in 2006 while Dubai with a population
of just over 1.3 million people had a humongous six million
tourists.
Luxury
resorts as destinations
Though the first session at the second and the last day of
HICSA 2007 revolved around luxury resorts as destinations,
the atmosphere during the discussion was anything but relaxed,
as panelists, which comprised hotel companies with luxury
brands, debated as to the real meaning of luxury.
Human
resources - Issues and perspectives
More and more Monday morning meetings, expense budgets and
seminars these days revolve around human resources - their
attraction and retention.
Alternate
hospitality: Timeshare, condos, fractional ownership, vacation
homes
Alternate hospitality is the concept of taking a resort, apartments
or urban accommodation unit and dividing its use rights each
year into increments of time such as a week or a month.
Potential
of niche marketing
Slated to be one of the emerging ten trends to 2010, niche
marketing is an amorphous concept, whose definition changes
with the times; what is niche today may not be so tomorrow.
Hot
seat for development heads
With this being the last session of the conference, everyone
expected it to deliver some fire. And so it did with Manav
Thadani taking on the role of the moderator.
