AH&LA serves notice to Mumbai University and Anjuman Islam
Bhavika Jhaveri - Mumbai
Mumbai University and its affiliate Anjuman-I-Islam's College Of Hotel &
Tourism Management Studies & Research have been accused of violating the
copyright law by the Educational Institute of American Hotel & Lodging Association
(AH & LA).
Anjuman-I-Islam informed that a notice was served to them for reproducing the
study material for the degree programme of the Mumbai University from AH&LA's
textbooks and distributed the same among five colleges in Mumbai. Confirming
the same, a source from the AH&LA, says, "Our head office got a copy
of the CD compiled by Anjuman Islam for the Mumbai University, and it was verbatim
of our three textbooks, which is a clear case of infringement of copyright and
unauthorised use of material." The source further informed that in response
to the notification, B P Sahni, principal of Anjuman-I-Islam and the chairman
of ad-hoc board of studies, University of Mumbai, admitted to have copied from
AH&LA's material. "Sahni admitted of copying the matter, in his letter,
but claimed to have done it with good intentions and in the benefit of the students.
We are not here to fight a battle, but there is something called as academic
honesty. They were willing to destroy and withdraw the CDs, but the head office
is still in the discussion stage to decide further course of action," the
source concludes.
