Scene and heard

Marcellus Baptista

What's happening in Mumbai’s hotels? A peek into the party circuit and events in the city...

Meal at the mall

Aman Verma flanked by Krishna Tamang and wife Anusha at China Gate

You visit the mall not just to shop but also to eat. There are varied eating out options at Atria, the millennium mall at Worli, and the latest was the opening of China Gate, the first branch of the popular eatery in Bandra. Located on the uppermost level of the stylish and sophisticated shopping complex, it looks like it will soon become the food destination of the corporate clientele and others in the business area. China Gate comes to you from Krishna Tamang who has also given the city eateries like Golden Orchid, Caravan Serai and Red Box. There was glitz and glamour on the opening night with the presence of television stars and models. Black & White and other spirits were doing the rounds and the smart staff was busy dishing out some good food from an extensive menu with as many as 300 items. Spotted savouring the fare were Aman Verma in a Chinese red shirt and other TV personalities like Jasbir Kaur, Kishwar Merchant, Hiten Paintal, Manish Khanna, Rio Kapadia, Gaurav Chanana, Brij Katyal, Kapil Sharma, Karan Kapur, Menka Chopra, Avinash Wadhawan and wife Natasha, Mohit Hussein and wife Chhavi, choreographer Shakir Shaikh, and models Jennifer Mayani, Bobby, Preeti and Gwen. And everyone looked like they would return again.

Wire and ice

Yana Gupta and Jimmy Mistry at the Della show at Hyatt Regency

You could call it a fashion show with a difference, but that would be putting it mildly. For, on view at Hyatt Regency was what could be termed futuristic fashion with models wearing cable wires, electrical switches, floor tiles, laminates, ply, timber and sound systems. These were the innovative creations by acclaimed architect and interior designer Jimmy Mistry. What he wished to show was an amalgamation of architecture and interior design with fashion, featuring the project list of Della Tecnica, India's largest turnkey design solution company, that was celebrating its tenth anniversary. Seen on the ramp were top models like Aditi Govitrikar, Candice Pinto, Mugdha Godse, Jesse Randhawa, Vidisha Pavate, Fleur Xavier, Megha Kawale, Kavita Kharayat, Mridula Chandrashekhar, Hufriya and Nina Manuel and also male models Muzzamil Ibrahim, Viraf Patel and Viraj Mulye. Drawing the maximum applause was showstopper Yana Gupta, showing off her new short haircut and, of course, interesting ensemble. Hosted by Pooja Bedi, the show attracted the likes of Star TV's Peter Mukherjea and wife Indrani, Namrata Barua, Parvez Damania and wife Roshni. Then it was time for Johnnie Walker Black Label and Jack Daniel's and a delightful dinner.

Show and tell

Models at the La Senza show at Atria

It was fashion and passion time at the Leela ballroom with the unfolding of Chimera 2006, presented by the graduating student designers of Wigan Fashion School, part of Wigan & Leigh College, UK. Guests waited patiently for an hour in their seats for the show to start (invariably student shows are always behind schedule), but once the show began people forgot about their inconvenience as some bold and beautiful designs caught their attention. Models Jesse Randhawa, Anupama Verma, Shonal Rawat, Anchal Kumar, Shruti Agarwal, Parmita Katkar and Sohini Jaitley walked the ramp along with some male models which included Acquin Paes. Keenly following the show were fashion designers Lascelles Symons and Lina Tipnis, glamour photographer Vikram Bawa and fashion store owner Viren Shah. And the winners were: Shruti Bheda, Best Designer, for her 'In The Closet' collection; Nidhi Jacob and Sakshi Sharma, Most Creative Collection, for 'December Darling' and 'The Brave Desert Bloom' respectively; Roopal BG, Technical Excellence, for 'Riding Gear - Body Safe.'

Five-star hotels have been missing out on business with quite a few fashion houses deciding to have in-store shows instead of cocktail-dinner affairs in the confines of a five-star venue. The latest such show was the one at La Senza, described as the ultimate lingerie destination, located in the plush environs of the new Atria mall. It was time for champagne and hors d'oeuvres while you waited for the show to start. While you could have a look at the colourful daywear, sleepwear and lingerie displayed on the shop floor, it was the lingerie and nightwear shown off by Indian models Anchal Kumar, Candice Pinto, Mridula Chandrashekhar, Parmita Katkar, Mugdha Godse, Chesz Shetty and Miheeka Varma and also European models Ana and Ala that would grab your attention. However, looking listless was showstopper Katrina Kaif dressed in daywear. Guests who wanted to see what women wore beneath included Sharon Prabhakar, Kanwal Toor, Aman Verma and Pankaj Udhas. Looking happy indeed was Joel Teitelbaum, president, La Senza International, visibly pleased to be at the global lingerie brand's 600th store.
