Focussing on the potential of the resort market in India, Dr Vijay Mallya, chairman, UB Group has zeroed on two islands Thinnakara and Cheriyam in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep for his foray into the Indian hospitality industry. An exclusive high-end beach resort will be developed on each island and is expected to begin functioning by next year.

Chairman,
UB Group

Speaking exclusively to Express Hospitality from America, Mallya revealed, "These two high-end beach resorts are a part of VJM Resorts, a company owned in my personal capacity. These shall be branded either 'Kingfisher' or 'VJM'. The resorts will be synonymous with style and luxury and will also form a part of the Kingfisher Holiday packages. Work has begun at a furious pace and these are slated to commence operations by 2007. Currently, VJM Resorts owns six properties in South Africa, including wildlife resorts." While Mallya refused to disclose the investment amount for the two resorts, he mentioned that he is scouting for suitable locations to set up more resorts.

Thinnakara and Cheriyam along with Suheli Valiyakara are three uninhabited islands opened for tourism development recently by the Lakshwadeep government, who had invited global bids for the same. The development of these islands, approximately 40 to 45 hectares each in size, will include construction of roads and basic tourism facilities.
